Emergency preparedness is a critical aspect of CCH operations. It is essential that all staff and physicians receive training and understand their roles and responsibilities in this field.
Summary of responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness; Infection Prevention and Control; Palliative Care, Spiritual Care, the incumbent will support the strategic goals and objectives of the Cornwall Community Hospital’s Infection Prevention and Control Program. As a member of the Infection Prevention and Control team, he/she supports the implementation of infection prevention and control practices, policies and procedures, to ensure compliance with legislation and best practices for the well-being of patients, healthcare workers and visitors. He/she actively participates in all functions, processes and activities including active surveillance, outbreak prevention and control, education and training of health care workers, patients and their families and on-going evaluation and continuous improvement of the Infection Prevention and Control Program.
Hours of Work:
Monday to Friday day shift
Incumbent may be on-call and work evenings and weekends as required (on a rotational basis).
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assists in the maintenance of Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures at CCH
• Conducts day-to-day surveillance
• Provides clinical support and counsel to clinical/professional staff
• Conducts audit activities and monitors compliance with Infection Prevention and Control policies, procedures, strategies, and standards
• Participates and/or leads outbreak investigation and management
• Provides consultation concerning sterilization and disinfection, internal maintenance, renovation and construction activities, patient care practices, product evaluation etc.
• Provides consultation on infection control and prevention workflows, PPE and/or best practices for any hospital staff/program
• Liaises with the Infection Control Team at the Health and Eastern Ontario Health Unit as required for matters such as outbreaks, exposures, surveillance, ministry guidelines and practices
• Actively participates in Committees, such as Infection Control and Antibiotic Stewardship
• Presents Infection Prevention and Control education at General Orientation, Nursing Orientation and to healthcare workers, medical staff, volunteers and students as required
Requirements of the job
• BScN who holds a current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
• Minimum three (3) years of recent acute care clinical experience
• Completion of a recognized Infection Prevention and Control Course endorsed by the Community & Hospital Infection Control Association – Canada
• Possess a Certification in Infection Control (CIC) from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) or be willing to obtain within three (3) years of hire
• Training and expertise in regards to CSA Standard Z317.13 Infection Control During Construction, Renovation, and Maintenance of Health Care Facilities
• Experience in infection prevention and control related to surveillance, education, consultation, occupational health and policy development
• Knowledge of standards of care, best practice, and legislative requirements for nursing, infection prevention and control and infection diseases
• Excellent interpersonal, leadership, teaching and communication skills
• Superior written, verbal and presentation skills
• Functional proficiency in both official languages (oral and written in English; oral in French – and testing completed)
