Duties:
An Orderly is a member of the nursing team and reports to the Manager or Director. The Orderly’s role is to provide client-centred care as directed by the Nurse. The Orderly documents interactions with clients in the electronic health record.
- Works under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse carrying out the responsibilities outlined in the Orderly job description.
- Assists in the provision of basic elements of care when deficits in routine activities of living occur in response to health problems.
- Accompanies clients to activities and treatments.
- Minimizes risk to patients, visitors, and staff by being aware of client care plans and by detecting changes in client status.
- Participates in Nurse-to-Nurse transfer of accountability and seeks guidance or clarification from the Nurse as necessary.
- Creates opportunities for clients to be involved in diversional activities e.g. Gym, organized activities in the evenings, walks, games, crafts, discussions of daily events.
- Reports pertinent, specific observations or encounters with clients to the RN.
- Creates a therapeutic environment by relating to clients in a respectful manner and by responding to the individual needs of clients.
- Ensures confidentiality of client information is maintained.
- Maintains therapeutic boundaries.
- Identifies and participates in activities aimed at continuous quality improvement.
- Assists in managing emergency situations by responding to emergency codes including the application of physical and mechanical restraints.
- Conducts the increased level of therapeutic engagement as initiated by the Nurse.
- Assists the Nurse to identify and minimize the risk of situations that may compromise the safety of persons in the hospital.
- Participates in the debriefing process with the health care team.
- Utilizes hospital electronic documentation system in accordance with hospital documentation policy.
- Assesses which information or situations should appropriately be referred to the Nurse.
- Self-directed around unit routines.
- Other duties as assigned to enable the functioning of the unit.
- Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.

Qualifications:
- Completion of Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.
- All mandatory training requirements upon hire.
- Current Heart Saver certificate in CPR within the last 12 months.
- Previous experience working with individuals with mental illness is preferred.
- Specific clinical areas may require additional qualifications.
- Current with WHMIS training, fire demo, fire accident, and disaster manual review.
- Proven ability in both written and verbal communication.English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, comprehension, reading & writing. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
