The Registered Nurse, Consult role will complete an in-depth mental health assessment and provide appropriate psychiatric emergency services including counseling, initiating community referrals, will facilitate safe discharge with the emergency physician, and recommend psychiatry assessment and admission to inpatient psychiatry when required. The role will also provide education and counselling to patients and families.   The role will work directly with Emergency Department and in consultation with the Psychiatry and Emergency physicians.  This role will an integral part of Mental Health in provided recommendations of care as well as implement crisis intervention techniques and therapeutic communication. 

Days and nights, including weekends, 12 hour shifts.

• Current Certificate of Competence, College of Nurses of Ontario;
• Five (5) years recent Psychiatry experience in an acute care setting;
• Demonstrated knowledge of crisis intervention techniques;
• Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of the Mental Health Act; 
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
• Demonstrated ability to assess patient learning needs and ability to plan appropriate teaching,
• Ability to develop, co-ordinate and deliver in-services, presentations;
• Ability to make effective referrals, reflecting advanced knowledge of the regional health care system in the area of Mental Health;  
• Strong collaborative skills in working with other TOH departments, police officers and other community partners;
• Proven ability to assess, plan, prioritize, organize, implement, evaluate and problem-solve;
• Proven ability to exercise mature, effective judgement and behaviour in an emergency situation and to work as part of an interdisciplinary team;
• Proven ability to be organized and thorough in information gathering and documentation practices and proficiency in the use of personal computers;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, problem solving and decision-making skills;
• Ability to work independently;
• Must be eligible to work in Canada.
   

• C.N.A. Psychiatric Nursing Certification;
• Proficiency in English and French – oral expression (advanced level) and comprehension (advanced level).
