Duties:
- The Staff Nurse is responsible for providing holistic nursing care using effective communication skills (verbal and written), observation and interpersonal skills.
- Clear understanding of client centred nursing care as it applies to a forensic psychiatric environment.
- Leading and participating in groups.
- Recognizing patient readiness to learn and providing individualized patient teaching.
- Providing patient care for the assigned caseload.
- Take in-charge duties and responsibilities.
- Manage and direct the care of patients in crisis situations.
- Safe preparation and administration of medication as per policy procedure.
- Work collaboratively and effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
- Active participation in Program and Discipline related committees.
- Application of the Mental Health Act, and all other legislation related to the practice of psychiatric nursing.
- Able to perform patient restraint as outlined by the Task Analysis – patient restraint (Physical) The Royal.
- Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.
- Ensure a work environment that is conducive to The Royal’s Anti-Racism, Harassment and Discrimination-Free Workplace Policy.
- Other assigned duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- BScN Preferred.
- Certification in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing is preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years recent nursing experience in Psychiatry is mandatory.
- Experience in Forensic Psychiatry is preferred.
- Clear understanding of MHA and relevant legislation
- Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in psychiatric nursing practice as articulated in the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice.
- Able to meet the standards of nursing practice of the College of Nurses
- Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation an asset
- CPR certification within the last 12 months
- Completion of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Workshop (CPI)
- WHMIS update in preceding 12 months.
- Fire training update in preceding 12 months.
- Must complete RAI-MH training upon hire. Input into the RAI-MH system is required on an ongoing basis.
- English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
- BScN Preferred.
