Duties:
Under the direction of the Manager, Patient Care Services, you will work as part of a team, providing services to people with complex mental illness and substance use disorders on an in-patient unit.
- Works in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team using best practice and innovative approaches to provide the best possible client- oriented rehabilitation and treatment services.
- Promotes a healthy lifestyle through direct assistance, health teaching and side by side assistance with activities of daily living, social relationships, transportation and employment.
- Assesses and identifies patient needs and responds to them appropriately and promptly.
- Monitors and documents patient response to therapeutic intervention and reports unexpected outcomes to the clinical team.
- Recognize patient readiness to change, engaging patients using motivational interviewing techniques.
- Collaborates with the clinical team to effectively manage rapidly changing situations.
- Ability to provide teaching to patients, family and other staff members.
- Demonstrates an awareness of and complies with, the vision and value statements of the ROHCG, relevant policies, procedures, responsibilities and routines and other relevant information.
- Promotes a client centred focused environment and effective communication of the interdisciplinary team.
- Knowledge and ability to facilitate therapeutic groups.
- Establishes and promotes effective therapeutic relationships between staff members, patients and their families.
- Assist with planning admissions, discharges, and transfers.
- Liaise with community partners, primary care, and other referral sources.
- Accountable to meet College of Nurses of Ontario Standards for RPN’s.
- Engages in enhancing knowledge through ongoing learning, education and reflective practice.
- Administers medications and performs treatments within the RPN’s full scope of practice according to applicable regulations and the College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards.
- Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.
- Ensure a work environment that is conducive to the Royal’s Harassment-Free Workplace Policy.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing;
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Previous nursing experience working in psychiatric/mental health specialization.
- Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
- Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
- WHMIS update in preceding 12 months.
- Fire Training update in the past 12 months.
- CPR Certification within the last 12 months.
- Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training (C.P.I.) required.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Ability to work effectively as a team player.
- Current knowledge of mechanical lifts, transferring and positioning techniques.
- English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
