Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) is responsible for collecting, receiving, accessioning and preparing all samples for diagnostic testing. In addition, the MLA is responsible for reporting results of clinical samples. The MLA may assist with the training of newly hired staff, students and residents in the reception, handling and processing of patient specimens. The MLA may also be required to identify and resolve unsuitable specimens for testing.
The MLA participates in service and hospital-wide activities and programs that model and promote a safe and healthy client-centered environment and that contribute to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.
Requirements:
Education and Experience:

Post-secondary training in an approved accredited medical laboratory technician program or Grade 12 Diploma and successful completion of relevant accredited courses along with OSMT certification (or equivalent). Knowledge, experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic/experience requirements/credentials.

Current certification in Basic CPR Level 1

Minimum of six months to one year of experience

Experience in Venipuncture (including infants)

Familiarity with current medical laboratory terminology

Current experience with various ECG procedures
Skills and Abilities:
-
Ability to process specimens in conjunction with reference laboratories and transport as per Transportation of Dangerous Goods protocol

Knowledge of relevant standards, procedures, and relevant regulations in medical laboratory theory, principles and practices

Incorporate working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation; transportation of dangerous goods, WHMIS, Universal precautions, safe handling practices and the safe disposal of specimens and materials once testing has been completed

Demonstrated keyboarding skills and computer knowledge

Ability to work as a vigorous team member in a very busy environment, ensuring timely completion of tasks

Ability to communicate with patients and the public in an effective and reassuring manner

Ability to assist with statistics, quality assurance and audit data

Other duties as assigned
