Emergency preparedness is a critical aspect of CCH operations. It is essential that all staff and physicians receive training and understand their roles and responsibilities in this field.

Summary of responsibilities

Reporting to the Director, Infection Prevention and Control and Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness (OHSW), you will be an integral part of our collaborative team in OHSW and support the program. The Occupational Health Nurse works to promote and restore employee health, safety and well-being. This includes the short term illness, long term illness and disability management, including both occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses to facilitate a timely, safe and sustainable return to work.

The Occupational Health Nurse actively engages and provides support and guidance to both staff and managers with ensuring staff compliance in all aspects of clinical occupational health and safety, including but not limited to mask fit (N95) testing, outbreaks, exposures, attendance management, training, incident investigation, new employee assessment, influenza, TB surveillance, and health surveillance programs. The Occupational Health Nurse will be involved in various committees and working groups that promote health, safety and wellness across the organization. This role, as a member of the OHSW team, under the direction of the program director is also responsible for implementing and delivering health and safety training across the hospital.

Requirements of the job

• Bachelor of Science Degree (BScN) in Nursing
• Current registration as an RN with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Certificate in Occupational Health Nursing or actively working towards a certificate in Occupational Health Nursing preferred. Consideration will be given to nurses interested in obtaining a Certificate in Occupational Health Nursing within 5 years of hire.
• Minimum three (3) years of recent acute care clinical experience (Med-Surg, ED, CCU, WCH, IMHU or other clinical area
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Human Rights Code, the Public Hospitals Act, WHMIS, occupational principles and practices, disability case management and modified work programs
• Sound knowledge of communicable diseases, infection control measures, as well as vaccinations
• Current First Aid and CPR training
• Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
• Demonstrated skills and abilities in working with people, communication, time management, conflict resolution and organizational skills
• Demonstrated ability to manage numerous and diverse activities, organizing and prioritizing appropriately to meet demands and expectations
• Demonstrated commitment to staff and patient safety and continuous improvement
• Functional proficiency in English (oral and written)
